The Colour of Nature
My inspiration often comes from the magnificent palette of colours that nature provides. I have found that some of my most creative ideas pop into my head when I’m walking our dogs, enjoying the fresh air, the trees, the flowers and weeds, the chirping of birds, the sound of insects and other small animals I may encounter on an off the beaten track adventure with two rather energetic hounds by my side. Of course, the seasons and especially the change in seasons, from the soft pastels of a dewy spring morning to the deep, moody hues of an autumnal twilight sky, and from the vibrancy of a sparkling summer day to the icy whites of a cold wintry afternoon, the natural world offers endless possibilities for creativity. My choices of gemstone, crystals, wire and other embellishments reflect these connections to the earth, the seasons, nature and the internal emotional atmosphere sparked by these breathtaking daily experiences. I am grateful that I started my creative journey behind the lens of a camera – I find that it has taught me to see the world in frames and always be on the lookout for the beauty around us that seems to go unnoticed. Every gemstone, crystal, and bead I choose reflects this connection to nature, creating jewellery that feels alive and deeply personal.
When selecting stones, I look for unique characteristics—shapes, textures, and colours that reflect the unpredictability and variety of nature. Each gemstone has its own narrative, for example: a raw quartz crystal, with its unpolished, rugged surfaces, can evoke the primal beauty of unspoilt landscapes. On the other hand, Amazonite, often described as a blend of turquoise and soft green with gentle white streaks, conjures images of tranquil oceans and serene skies.
To me, nature is the ultimate guide on colour. In my designs, I regularly attempt to replicate the warm ambers of autumnal leaves, the soothing greens of dreamy meadows or the cool blues of a mountain stream. For example, pairing Citrine with gold wire can mimic the sun filtering through leaves. This may sound whimsical, but this perspective is how I choose to interpret the essence of my designs. These inspirations extend not only to the design but often to the names of my pieces as well.
But what about “wire”? Wire isn’t just a structural element—it’s an integral part of a design. Copper wire, with its warm, earthy hue, pairs beautifully with neutral stones, while gold wire adds a touch of luxury to vibrant gems and silver wire provides a wonderful backdrop for cooler colours. But there are no set rules - the beauty of the design lies in the freedom to take a balanced view and be playful every time.
One of the most powerful differences between handmade artisan jewellery and mass-produced pieces lies in texture and imperfection. Nature isn’t flawless - it’s the irregularities that make it so captivating. When I was younger, I strove for perfection. It took many years, especially the hours behind the camera, to realise that perfection, beauty and excellence are not unanimous. I have since adopted this principle in my work and am aware that every twist of wire, every asymmetrical stone, and every handmade creation tells the story of human touch and artistry. I seldom try to hide imperfections, uneven stitches or irregular shapes, believing this sacrifices individuality in favour of uniformity. Handmade pieces celebrate the organic beauty of imperfections and offer the soul that comes from a maker’s hands. No two pieces are ever identical, just as no two flowers or snowflakes are alike.
In a nutshell, by choosing materials that reflect natural palettes and embracing the imperfections of handmade craftsmanship, these pieces become more than just an accessory - they are a small reminder of nature’s wonder. So, the next time you pick up a piece of handmade jewellery, take a moment to appreciate the colours, the textures and quirks. Chances are, you’re cradling a little piece of nature in the palm of your hand.
Like a breath of fresh air
The “Meadow” necklace and earrings feature a series of carefully looped stitches that mimic the gentle undulations of a grassy field, giving it an organic, flowing appearance. Embedded within this delicate crochet framework are vibrant green beads, crystals and pearls that sparkle like dew-kissed leaves in a meadow. The copper wire, with its warm, earthy tone, evokes the natural elements of the earth, creating a harmonious balance between metal and nature.
