Styling Your Handbag

A handbag is so much more than just a handbag. For those who simply use it as a functional item, I’m asking you to reconsider - it’s a statement piece, an extension of your personality, a key player in your overall look. Whether you’re stepping out for a casual adventure or a formal event, the way you style your handbag can make or break your ensemble. Here’s my short guide to handbag styling:

The material or fabric and texture of your handbag will add depth and character to your outfit. Smooth leather bags offer a classic and polished look, while textured materials like woven fabrics such as linen, cotton and luxurious silk favour an artisanal, unique vibe. Mix textures to create interest, such as pairing a soft leather shoulder bag with jeans and a T-shirt or a flowy dress with a structured silk crochet handbag.

When considering colour coordination, there are also options: either choose a handbag that complements your outfit, or one that contrasts with it. Neutral tones are versatile and easy to pair with most colours, while bolder hues can act as a statement piece offering a pop of colour.  As an example, imagine coordinating a patterned or multi-coloured bag with a solid-coloured outfit - it will not only accentuate your outfit but also let your handbag shine.

I’ve always found it quite difficult to decide on the size of a handbag. The size of your handbag not only affects your convenience, but should also flatter your body type and align with the occasion, so it’s important to consider proportions in your choice. If you’re tall and sporty your handbag choice will be poles apart from someone who is petite or has a typical hourglass shape. In general terms, a small clutch is ideal for an evening event, while a spacious tote is perfect for daytime errands. However, follow your heart and your personal style to maintain a harmonious visual balance between your bag and your body, practicality and elegance.

You also need to match the formality of your handbag with the event. What’s the occasion? You don’t necessarily have to sport a boring briefcase if you’re strutting your stuff at the office in a tailored suit, you might opt for a stylish, structured backpack instead. And you can add a touch of sophistication to casual outfits with a beautiful silk handbag, for example, elevating semi-formal looks with its luxurious texture and exquisite colour.

Lastly, keep in mind that there needs to be rapport between your handbag and your shoes, your belt and other fashion accessories like jewellery. Strive for cohesion and avoid over-matching – focus on contrast and balance as being key to creating your desired look.

Of course, I can’t finish this blog without shining an “unbiased” spotlight on the uniqueness of handmade silk crochet bags. The silk yarn bags in my collection will add unparalleled charm to your accessory assortment. Using recycled silk ribbon yarn not only promotes sustainability but also carries a mysterious history, adding a layer of intrigue and magic. Each thread has lived a previous life, breathing old stories into a new handbag. Unlike branded, mass-produced handbags, each silk crochet bag is one-of-a-kind. It takes me approximately 10 hours to handcraft a single piece, with meticulous planning going into every detail. The process begins with sourcing recycled sari ribbon yarns, transforming them into something entirely new and beautiful, while maintaining a commitment to ethical and sustainable fashion.

A handmade silk handbag transcends seasonal trends and is a timeless accessory, outlasting many other fashion items in both style and quality. Whether you pair it with a whimsical summer dress, a T-shirt, jeans and blazer look or an elegant evening outfit, carrying one is like holding a piece of art - something uniquely yours that no machine could ever replicate.

To summarise - styling your handbag is as important as choosing your clothing, shoes or jewellery. A well-chosen bag complements your look and expresses your individuality.

So, as you step out with your chosen handbag, let it speak for you - whether it whispers elegance, shouts boldness, or tells the story of its magical journey. It’s more than an accessory; it’s a treasure that stands the test of time.
